
In particular, Nathaniel understands the importance of substantive representation and works to empower generations of law students and young lawyers. Since 2022, Nathaniel has contributed $80,000 to create and sustain a bursary in his parents’ honour at Dalhousie’s Schulich School of Law, helping support Black and Indigenous law students pursuing their dreams.
Through the bursary, all Black and Indigenous 3L students will receive personal financial support along with information surrounding financial literacy. With this effort, Nathaniel aims to help underserved communities prosper.
At Marshall Workplace Law, we understand the importance of giving back and proactively engaging with community stakeholders to foster positive change.

Nathaniel is also a strategic advisor to the Black HR Professionals of Canada network, which exists to visibly increase and support the culturally engaged Black Diaspora to excel academically, prosper professionally and positively influence the HR community. Both within its legal practice and beyond, Marshall Workplace Law is dedicated to ameliorating historical and systemic disadvantages.
Law alum creates award so students like the one he once was can realize their dreams
A graduate of Schulich Law’s Indigenous Blacks & Mi’kmaq Initiative (IB&M), Nathaniel Marshall (BA’09 JD’13) dreamed of becoming a lawyer so he could give back to his community. Now, he has a Toronto-based practice specializing in workplace issues including anti-Black racism. With the Keith & Gail Marshall IB&M Award, Marshall is helping current students realize their dreams.

Marshall Workplace Law proudly supports community access to youth sports by covering enrollment fees for students in need of financial assistance, ensuring every child has the opportunity to participate in recreational and competitive basketball.
